Sculpture Assistant
Charles Bergen & Raymond Kaskey
During the summer of 2017, I assisted the public sculptors Raymond Kaskey and Charles Bergen with the research and design of various commissions
I spent the majority of my time with Charles, designing the Bowie Centennial sculpture and refurbishing a series of callboxes on Rhode Island Avenue with historical tableaus. My work included researching the notable historical events of each place and translating them into simple graphics that would be accessible to pedestrians.
Raymond Kaskey is a renowned public sculptor, most notable for building the Portlandia statue and doing the castings for the WWII monument. He works reflected a classical realism that is common in DC public sculptures. Charles Bergen is an architect-turned-sculptor with various public commissions around DC.
Michael O’Malley
During the summer of 2016 I worked at the farm and studio of Michael O’Malley, helping to fabricate various wooden sculptures.
I was able to witness the entire design and fabrication process of sculptures of various sizes. In addition I took part in the construction of the roof and soffits of the studio, learning more practical fabrication and design practices.
