Haystack Mountain School of Crafts
I served as the summer assistant at Haystack, where I was responsible for the experience of 1,200 students, teachers, and artisans over the course of six months.
Working there, I was responsible for all parts of the Haystack experience. This included fixing all manner of problems, supervising work-study students, and even being on call through the night to deal with emergencies.
Haystack is a renowned craft school that combines traditional craft education with cutting edge digital fabrication thanks to its MIT FabLab. Haystack brings together a diverse range of thinkers including artisans, artists, scientist, and designers to share ideas and learn new techniques. The summer programming included 6 two-week sessions, an artist residency, a conference, and various events for the community.
In addition, I was able to experiment in the fab lab, honing my abilities and playing with new machines such as their Formlabs SLA printer. During my time there, I became extremely interested in the grey area that sits between traditional craft techniques and modern digital fabrication.
